Cameron Highlands Revisited: A Rainy Trip!

Day 1

It’s been ages since we last visited Cameron Highlands as a family! The last time Azfar was here, he was still in kindergarten, now he’s in high school! So much has changed over the years, with new spots to explore, but with the school holidays and the rainy season in full swing, our time was more about dodging rain than sightseeing. Not to mention, this wasn’t exactly a holiday trip, it was a working one!

We managed a quick stop, in the rain, at the entrance to Hobbitoon for a photo, with a promise to come back when the skies clear up. If you’re planning a trip, take my advice, if you can sneak some time off, go on a weekday. The roads and places will be way less crowded. But, if you’re like me with school-aged kids, that might be tricky. Unless you’re okay with them playing hooky for a few days. (No judgment!)

We will surely come back for Hobbitoon

This was my first experience with the famous Cameron Highlands traffic, thanks to school holidays. We chose the Simpang Pulai route instead of Tapah, which turned out to be a blessing. The road was in better condition, but the rain was relentless. We were crawling along in heavy traffic when we were almost at Brinchang, with fallen trees adding to the mix. I’m not going to lie, I was pretty nervous!

After braving two hours of congestion through Brinchang and Tanah Rata, we finally made it to Habu. The plan was to get some work done and then visit the Boh Plantation café, but alas, another fallen tree blocked the route! So, we improvised and took some great shots for my assignment near the entrance of Boh Plantation at Habu. The Boh Plantation was as stunning as ever, making for a perfect backdrop! Check out the pictures we took, and if you want to see more, head over to my YouTube for the full video https://youtu.be/Ia5sY0qdBfI .

By the time we wrapped up, it was getting late, but we made sure to try the famous Aidilbakri Strawberry Nasi Lemak as suggested by my friend. Yes, strawberry nasi lemak! The rice was fragrant, and the sambal was a delicious mix of sweet strawberries and savory anchovies. I wasn’t too hungry, so Azfar and I shared a plate, which was more than enough.

Us enjoying Nasi Lemak Strawberry while my son opted out of the picture. Crunchy hot fried chicken, pandan nasi lemak & strawberry sambal.

After a quick pit stop at the convenience store, we finally arrived at our accommodation, Cahaya Villa. The place looked beautiful, surrounded by flowers and tall trees, although arriving in the pouring rain made it feel a little spooky! There was no one at the reception when we arrived, and after ringing the bell to no avail, my husband had to call the owner.

The villa was mostly wooden structures, which added to the charm, but after a closer look in the daylight, we weren’t too impressed with the cleanliness. Molds on the shower walls, leaky bathroom roofs, and patches on the headboard that had us questioning the housekeeping. I took a tour video when we arrived, but after seeing more of the room, I won’t be posting it on YouTube!

Despite the hiccups, it was a memorable trip. Maybe next time, we’ll skip the rain and mold!

So that’s a wrap for day 1
