I’ve tried all three styles of traveling – traveling with agencies, full DIY Holiday, and a mix of both. And let me tell you, while agency trips are super convenient, my DIY trips with my husband and son have been the most fun (and chaotic, but in the best way).
Traveling with a Travel Agency

If maximizing your vacation time is the end goal, travel agencies are your BFFs. They plan everything – your itinerary, transportation, food options (a lifesaver if you have dietary restrictions), and even the best photo spots. All you have to do is pack your outfits, charge your gadgets, and show up. It’s basically outsourcing all the boring parts of travel.
But here’s the catch: unless you splurge on a private tour or a small group package, you’re stuck with big groups and rigid schedules. And for a punctual person like me, waiting for that one person who’s always late can drive you up the wall.

Also, let’s not forget the rushing – hopping from one location to the next with barely enough time to breathe, let alone soak up the vibe of a place. Strolling quaint alleys or lounging at local cafés? Forget it. But of course, you’ll be able to fill your albums with all the must-have photos.
If you’ve got a corporate holiday trip on your plate, though, a travel agency is a lifesaver. Trust me, I’ve tried DIY-ing a company trip as the treasurer (shudders). Collecting funds, booking hotels, planning activities – it’s basically unpaid labor. Never again!
DIY Travel: Freedom and Chaos

DIY trips are a different kind of adventure. We love the freedom to explore markets, hidden alleys, and local grocery stores (don’t judge; we find it fascinating). There’s no rush to pack three destinations into one day. On average, we visit just one spot a day, and it’s glorious.
We always take our time to observe the locals, stroll through parks admiring the diverse plants and flowers, actually feel the sun on our faces, sip hot chocolate at a sidewalk café, let my son roll and run on the grass, and enjoy the view from a museum rooftop. Oh, and let’s not forget the mandatory ‘getting lost’ moment while driving around. I swear, it happens at least once every trip!
However, DIY isn’t for everyone, especially if you’re traveling with more than five people. Herding a big group without a set itinerary? Nope, not happening. For our small family of three, though, it’s perfect.
Hybrid Travel
Here’s where things get interesting. Why not mix it up? Book your own flights and accommodations, but hire a local travel agency for ground arrangements like transport and food. That way, you get the freedom of DIY with the convenience of expert planning for the trickier parts.
A Few Tips for Your Next Trip
• For agency trips: Make sure the agency is legit and registered with relevant authorities in both your home and destination countries.
• For DIY trips: Always check local regulations and get proper travel insurance.
At the end of the day, there’s no right or wrong way to travel – it’s all about what works for you. Just remember, whether you’re a planner, a wanderer, or somewhere in between, the goal is to enjoy the journey (and maybe not lose your sanity).
