How I Turned My Lifestyle Into a Healthy One Without the Gym
Let’s be real—gym memberships and sweaty workout classes aren’t really my thing anymore. It is fun if you have the time to commit to a gym membership but with my personal chores, family, and work to juggle, I just can’t commit to a gym membership right now. And honestly, how many of us have signed up for one and barely used it? Been there, done that. If you’re like me, this is for you.

I know I need to make changes to my lifestyle, especially as I’m getting older. My goal is to stay mobile so I can enjoy my golden years, and hopefully be healthier and stronger so I can stay independent. I’ve found my own ways to stay active and healthy without having to go to the gym or sign up for big sporty events. Doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy joining a sporty event every now and then though.
Here’s how I’ve made it work, one little habit at a time.
Walking is My Go-To
Walking is probably the easiest way to stay active, and it’s my favorite. I aim to walk at least 7,500 steps a day. Ideally, I should be doing 10,000, but for now, 7,500 is what I can do consistently. It serves two purposes for me: one, it keeps me active, and two, it helps me maintain my Gold or Platinum AIA Vitality membership. These membership levels come with extra benefits depending on the plan you’re on, but I’ll save that for another day.
Now, here’s the thing—I love walking outdoors. It’s just better for my mental health, you know? I get fresh air, clear my head, and tick off my steps goal all at once.
But of course, the weather doesn’t always cooperate. When it’s raining or I’m just not feeling like heading outside, I’ll hop on my walking pad or elliptical machine at home. To make it less boring, I’ll either watch something on my iPad or TV or put on some fast, energizing music to get in the mood. It really depends on my mood—sometimes I’m all about the music, and other times, it’s a Netflix binge for me, even doom scrolling on Instagram helps.
If you’re thinking of getting a walking pad, go for a foldable one so it’s easier to store, like this one here.
I got this elliptical machine from Decathlon years ago. With a bit of maintenance, like oiling the hinges now and then, I think it can last for a really long time.

Sneaky Ways to Get Moving
I’ve also started looking for little ways to move more throughout the day. Like, I always take the stairs if it’s an option. It’s one of those simple things that doesn’t feel like a workout but still makes a difference.
And parking? If I’m driving alone, I always prioritize safety and look for ladies’ parking or a spot near the entrance. But if I’m not alone, I don’t mind parking further away just to sneak in those extra steps.
And that two minutes of brushing my teeth? I sneak in some leg stretches or squats while at it. Every bit counts!
Walking with My Son (and Sometimes Alone)

One of my favorite things to do is walk around the neighborhood with my son. It’s nice spending that time together, just chatting or exploring the area. Sometimes, we embark on little mission together—like the RapidKL x Mechamato hunt!

But I also really enjoy my solitary walks. That’s when I can zone out and just be alone with my thoughts. It’s my “me time,” and it feels so uninterrupted and peaceful.
Whatever you choose to do, you’ll be racking up those steps and getting closer to a healthier you. Just make sure you wear comfortable shoes suitable for walking long distance like this pair here. Your future self will definitely thank you!
A Little Strength Training at Home
I’m not into heavy lifting or long workout sessions, but I do keep dumbbells in my living room. If I’m watching TV in the evening, I’ll pick them up and do a few reps. Nothing fancy—just enough to keep my arms and shoulders strong. Dumbbells are great because they help build muscle, improve strength, and even work on your balance. Plus, they’re so versatile, you can use them for a bunch of different exercises. It’s an easy way to stay active without needing to go to the gym.

Eating Healthy with a Little Motivation
Another thing I love about AIA Vitality is that they reward points for healthy food choices. It’s like a little nudge to eat better because I know I’m getting something extra out of it. For me, healthy eating is all about balance—lots of veggies, lean proteins, and cutting down on processed stuff. Oh, and drinking water! Can’t forget that.
Making It Work for Me
What I’ve learned is that staying healthy doesn’t have to be complicated or overwhelming. It’s not about big workouts or drastic changes—it’s about finding what works for you. For me, that’s walking (a lot), sneaking in movement wherever I can, and making small, easy choices that add up over time. Consistency and persistence always win in the long run.
So, yeah, no gym, no fancy classes, just little things that fit into my life. And honestly, it works great for me.

Crooked Trees, Cartoons, and a Harry Potter Cape
One of my fondest childhood memories with my mom was when we sat together watching cartoons. I once asked her, “Aren’t cartoons only for kids? Are adults even allowed to watch them?” She smiled and said, “Don’t let society decide what you can or can’t do, or what you can or can’t watch. Cartoons make me happy, and sometimes the world is just too serious. Watching them gives me a little escape from it all.”

Takaful: A Practical Solution for Settling Debts After Death
When someone passes away, any outstanding debts they leave behind must be paid using their assets, even if it means using up everything. This ensures their obligations are fulfilled before the remaining wealth, if any, is distributed to their heirs. However, if the deceased leaves no assets, their family members are not obligated to settle the debts.

Are Unit Trusts Suitable for Emergency Funds? Let’s Break It Down
Yesterday, I met a friend who’s going through a rough patch in her career – her future feels uncertain, and she’s understandably stressed. During our chat, she shared how a unit trust agent approached her at the café she is currently working at. The agent, initially pretending to need her mobile number for venue bookings, later tried to convince her to open an emergency fund using unit trust investments.
