Medical Card Is A Waste of Money?

Written by

Amir (real name hahaha) pays about RM100 for ASTRO bill every month without fail for the Sport’s package. RM100 gone each time. The thing is, we barely watches Astro. Almost ten years in, he suddenly feels like it’s a waste.

“I’ve spent so much, but I barely watch the television. I always come home late, my wife prefers watching Netflix. Might as well cancel it!”

So, he terminated his Astro subscription. But… does he get back all the money he’s paid over the past ten years?

Nope. And we are not complaining about it.

Now, let’s talk about takaful.

You’ve been contributing for five years but never had to make a claim. Suddenly, you feel like it’s a waste and want to cancel. Do you get all your money back?

If it’s a takaful plan with an investment account, you’ll get some cash value, but not much.

But if it’s a standalone plan? There’s probably no cash value.

However, do you know what you do get? Continuous blessings from your contributions.

Because that money you put in every month? It helps cover medical bills for other people, who needed treatment in the hospital. Your contribution is part of a bigger system that supports those in need.

Very much like how khairat kematian works, except this is for hospitalisation. I sometimes call medical card as khairat hospitalisation.

So, the truth is, there’s no such thing as “wasting” money on takaful.

Look at these real-life cases:

  • Chef Wan started his takaful plan at 24. He only needed it at 65 for lymphoma treatment.
  • Fasha Sandha has had takaful since 2004. In 2023, she finally used it for an eye injury on set.
  • I’ve been contributing since 2004, and alhamdulillah, I’ve never had to claim.

And for that, I’m grateful.

Why? Because it means I’ve been healthy all this time. And I hope I will continue staying healthy.

Don’t feel like you’re losing money just because you haven’t made a claim. That’s like hoping to fall sick just to “break even.”

Takaful isn’t about profit and loss. It’s about helping one another. Today, you contribute for someone else. Tomorrow, if you ever need it, others will contribute for you.

So, shift your mindset. Understand the purpose of takaful. And you’ll see—it’s worth so much more than just money.

Hopping on and off RapidKL with RapidKL x Mechamato on Chinese New Year – because why walk when you can ride?

The plan was simple: get the super affordable MyCity Pass (RM6 per person), hop on and off the trains, maybe stop by a museum, check out Central Market, grab lunch at a cute café in Petaling Street, and basically play tourist in KL. Sounds fun, right? Yeah… that was before reality hit.
